Cosmetic dermatology lies at a fascinating intersection of medicine and aesthetics. Each procedure, while highly precise and scientific, is guided by the artistic vision of the doctor. They must understand what makes each patient’s features unique and design an outcome that harmonizes with their natural features.
Dr. Rawaa Almukhtar, a dermatologist and fellowship-trained laser and cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, approaches “each face as a unique canvas”. Dr. Almukhtar specializes in both medical and cosmetic dermatology. She serves on several dermatologic society committees (including ASLMS, ASDS, WDS, and AAD), and she is actively involved in clinical research on advanced treatments and has authored multiple publications and textbook chapters.
Omnia Magazine reached out to Dr. Almukhtar to share her perspective on her field and career.
OMNIA: What inspired you to pursue dermatology, and how did you know it was the right field for you?
DR. ALMUKHTAR: Dermatology captured everything I love: visual diagnosis, hands-on procedures, artistic detail, and the chance to care for people across generations. It’s a field where medicine meets artistry, and that truly resonated with me. I often find myself treating grandparents, their children, and their grandchildren, building long-term, meaningful relationships. That continuity of care and the opportunity to improve both skin health and confidence affirmed that dermatology was exactly where I was meant to be.
OMNIA: What excites you most about the future of dermatology and cosmetic treatments?
DR. ALMUKHTAR: What excites me most is the power to help people feel like the best version of themselves- not younger or unnatural, but refreshed, confident, and comfortable in their own skin. With advances in regenerative medicine, lasers, and personalized treatment plans, we now have the tools to stimulate the skin’s natural healing and repair processes- especially from sun damage and environmental aging. It’s not about reversing time; it’s about aging gracefully, with integrity.
OMNIA: Does your artistic sensibility influence the way you approach procedures? If so, how?
DR. ALMUKHTAR: Absolutely. I approach each face as a unique canvas, aiming to enhance balance and proportion while respecting what makes someone distinct. My artistic background helps me visualize harmony and subtle refinement before I even begin a treatment. I believe the best cosmetic outcomes are those that are invisible to others but deeply felt by the patient- where you look rested, vibrant, and authentically you.
OMNIA: If you could shift one common narrative around cosmetic treatments, what would it be—and what new story would you tell instead?
DR. ALMUKHTAR: I would shift the perception that cosmetic treatments are purely superficial or about chasing youth. The story I want to tell is one of natural, regenerative care- where we support the body’s own ability to repair damage, especially from things like sun exposure, and help patients look how they feel inside. It’s about empowerment, not perfection. Cosmetic dermatology can be part of a broader wellness journey where we give people the tools to take care of themselves from the inside out.
